The Church of the Holy Cross in Nin is an extremely fascinating monument and an important site in Croatian heritage. When you look at it, you get the impression that it is painted. At least that was my feeling.

The Church of the Holy Cross (Crkva svetog Križa) stands on a hill in the town center and is one of the best-preserved examples of pre-Romanesque sacred architecture in Croatia. It was built in the 9th century and has a simple but charmingly decorated façade.

One of the most distinctive features of the Church of the Holy Cross is its small size. It measures just 7.8 meters long and 7.6 meters wide, making it one of the smallest churches in the world. Despite its modest dimensions, it holds extraordinary significance for the history and culture of the region.

The church's façade is richly decorated with stone and has three round window openings and an ornamental entrance arch. The interior of the church is simple and modest, with stone benches for the faithful.

The most characteristic element of the Church of the Holy Cross is the so-called "Palaczyk" (Benediktinski palac), which is a small wooden structure on top of the church. It probably served as a bell tower or an observatory.

Near the Church of the Holy Cross there is also a stone cross 5.5 meters high, known as "Grgurov mauzolej" (Mauzoleum Grgura). It is a replica of the cross, and the original is kept in the Museum of the Croatian Salt Basin in Solin.

The Church of the Holy Cross in Nin is an important pilgrimage site and attracts tourists from around the world. Its unusual size, ancient architecture and artistic details make it a unique monument well worth visiting during a stay in Nin.
