Zadar's Roman heritage

Zadar, a picturesque city in Croatia, hides a rich history dating back to ancient Rome. For centuries it was an important military and commercial center, and its inhabitants benefited from the empire's prosperity. To this day we can admire impressive Roman buildings that testify to Rome's power and influence in the area. Walking through the old town center you can even see old roads, which fortunately have been preserved to the present day.

Roman Forum: The heart of Roman Zadar was the Forum, built in the 1st century BC. Fragments of the paved square, colonnades and shops have been preserved, giving us insight into the daily life of its inhabitants.

Temple of Claudius: Built in honor of Emperor Claudius in AD 46, the temple was an impressive structure with Corinthian columns. Today only its ruins remain, but they still impress.

Triumphal Arch: Built in the 1st century AD, the triumphal arch commemorated the victories of Emperor Augustus. Although partly ruined, it still stands as an impressive symbol of Roman power.

Remains of the defensive walls: The massive defensive walls once surrounded the city, protecting it from raids. Fragments of the walls and gates have survived to this day, giving us a picture of the former urban layout.

Influence on architecture: Roman architecture had a significant influence on the building style in Zadar. This can be seen in many buildings from the medieval and Renaissance periods that draw on Roman forms and elements.

Daily life: Romans in Zadar led varied lives. They were engaged in trade, crafts, agriculture, as well as administration and the military. The city was an important cultural center, as evidenced by the many remains of temples, theaters, and baths.
