Rosslyn Chapel

Located in the picturesque village of Roslin, just 12 kilometres from Edinburgh, this 15th-century building is a true gem of Gothic architecture that for centuries has attracted both history lovers and seekers of mysteries.

Rosslyn Chapel, originally planned as a collegiate church dedicated to St. Matthew, was founded in 1446 by Sir William St Clair (Sinclair), Prince of Orkney. This influential Scottish noble dreamed of creating a monumental church that would serve as a place of worship and a family mausoleum. Unfortunately, the founder's death in 1484 interrupted the building works. His son, Sir Oliver St Clair, continued the project, but only the presbytery and the crypt were completed. What we see today is just a fragment of the original plan – and yet the chapel still astonishes with its complexity and beauty.

Fun fact: In the sacristy, which served as a workshop for medieval master builders, drawings and plans of the presbytery were found carved into the walls. It's a real treasure for architectural historians, providing insight into the process of creating this extraordinary place.

Rosslyn Chapel is famed for its wealth of detail – every pillar, boss and corbel is covered with intricate carvings. You'll find plant motifs, angels, animals, and even grotesque creatures. These decorations have earned the chapel the nickname "the Bible carved in stone." Particular attention is drawn to the so-called Apprentice Pillar – a column decorated with complex patterns which, according to legend, was the work of a young craftsman murdered in jealousy by his master. That story echoes Masonic tales of Hiram Abiff, which only fuels speculation about the chapel's connections to Freemasonry.

Another fun fact: the chapel contains over 200 carved bosses on the ceiling, which some researchers interpret as a form of musical notation. In 2005, musicians Thomas and Stuart Mitchell suggested that these patterns might correspond to a medieval melody called the "Rosslyn Motet." Did the builders encode centuries-old music in the stone?

One cannot write about Rosslyn Chapel without mentioning its legendary aura. After the publication of Dan Brown's "The Da Vinci Code" it became a magnet for tourists who believe it conceals secrets of the Templars or even the Holy Grail. Although historians are skeptical of these theories, it's undeniable that the Sinclairs, the chapel's founders, had links to Freemasonry – William Sinclair was in the 17th century recognized as the first Grand Master of Scottish Freemasonry. Symbolism in the chapel, such as a chained Lucifer or figures wearing blindfolds, further fuels theories of hidden messages.

Fun fact: In 1650, during the English invasion, Oliver Cromwell's troops turned the chapel into a stable, and in 1688 it was ransacked by a mob. Despite these turbulent events, many original sculptures survived, attesting to the skill of its creators.

Today Rosslyn Chapel is not only a historic monument but also a living place – services are still held here, while it also operates as a tourist attraction. Walking among its pillars, you can almost feel the spirit of the Middle Ages. It's also worth visiting the nearby Roslin Glen Country Park or ruins of Roslin Castle, which complete the mystical atmosphere of the surroundings.
