  • The Ghost of the Piper:According to legend, at night the ghost of a piper who was killed during a siege wanders the castle. The sounds of bagpipes and mournful tunes can then be heard.
  • Black Dog: It is said that a black dog appears at the castle, a harbinger of death in the royal family.
  • Unicorn: Legend has it that a unicorn sleeps beneath the castle, guarding a treasure.
  • Greyfriars Bobby (the dog): The faithful dog Bobby guarded his master's grave for 14 years at Greyfriars Kirkyard.
  • Ghost of Anne Boleyn: According to one legend, the ghost of Anne Boleyn, the second wife of Henry VIII, haunts the castle's State Rooms. Anne Boleyn never visited Edinburgh during her lifetime, but her ghost is said to have appeared there and was even seen wearing a crown.

Because of this, it is often said that whoever finds a golden rabbit will also find a treasure.
  • Devil's chest: There is a tale about a mysterious chest said to be hidden in one of the castle's rooms. It is said that anyone who opens this chest will be possessed by the devil.
