Makarska - Alleyways
The town has many charming alleyways, especially in the historic centre. Narrow, stone-built streets are full of souvenir shops, cafés and restaurants serving local specialties. In the very heart of the town there are many landmarks, such as St. Mark's Cathedral.
Makarska is not just about the sea and the beach. To be honest, before we went to Makarska I didn't know there was also something like an old town here similar to Dubrovnik. I thought the development here was mostly modern. In the afternoon, when most people were spending time on the beach, we went off to explore the town. It was a good choice because there were hardly any crowds compared with the same time in Dubrovnik or Split. The alleys, as you would expect in Croatia, are narrow and characteristic, situated very close to one another.

One of the most picturesque streets in Makarska is Kalalarga Street, also known as the Riva, which runs along the waterfront. It's an ideal place for a romantic walk, where you can admire views of the sea and the islands and the boat pier from which excursions to the nearby islands depart.
Another interesting street is Sveti Petar Street, which leads up to Sveti Petar hill and the church at its summit. Along the way you can admire beautiful stone houses with Dalmatian-style terraces and enjoy wonderful views of the surrounding area.
It's also worth visiting Kralja Petra Krešimira IV Street, which leads to superb beaches. This street is home to numerous shops, bars and restaurants, as well as monuments and sculptures that recall the town's rich history.
In Makarska you can find many other charming alleyways that are worth seeing. It's a wonderful place to spend a romantic evening, stroll along the pretty streets and enjoy beautiful views of the Adriatic Sea.
