Lokrum Island has a rich history, and its name comes from the Latin word "acrumen" meaning bitterness or tartness. According to legend, Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte planned to build a palace on the island but fled after a few days, saying the island was "too bitter".
The island is wooded, and there are many interesting sites to visit, such as a 16th-century Benedictine monastery, a fortress, Maximilian's grotto, botanical gardens, and beaches. Lokrum is also home to many species of plants and animals, including lizards, rabbits, goats, and birds.
The island is a popular holiday spot, thanks to its picturesque scenery and beautiful beaches. There are many restaurants, bars and cafés on the island, as well as souvenir shops.
Lokrum Island is easily accessible from Dubrovnik, with boat trips organized by many tour operators. Because of its status as a nature reserve, the island is subject to a number of restrictions, such as bans on swimming in certain areas and prohibitions on motor vehicles.
