Fountain at night
Ross Fountain in Edinburgh at night – a beautifully illuminated Victorian fountain in West Princes Street Gardens. Night photos and evening atmosphere.
Ross Fountain – history and architecture
Ross Fountain is one of Edinburgh's most recognizable attractions, located in the heart of West Princes Street Gardens, right at the foot of the famous Edinburgh Castle. This impressive Victorian cast-iron fountain has a rich history dating back to the mid-19th century. It was designed by Christopher Dresser and cast by the Val d'Osne company in France. It is named after Daniel Ross, an exotic animal dealer who donated it to the city of Edinburgh in 1869.
The fountain stands about 12 metres high and consists of three tiers, richly decorated with allegorical figures representing the four continents – Europe, Asia, the Americas and Africa. The whole is topped by a statue of a woman holding a trident. For many years the fountain was out of use and fell into disrepair until the city decided to undertake an expensive restoration. The renovation works lasted several years and cost millions of pounds – it was one of the most costly conservation projects in Edinburgh's history. The restored fountain was officially reopened in 2018 and has since become a true symbol of the area.
Fountain at night – a magical sight
What sets Ross Fountain apart from other Edinburgh attractions is its distinctive appearance after dark. In the evening the fountain is beautifully lit with golden lights that highlight every detail of its ornate decoration. In the background the silhouette of Edinburgh Castle rises majestically, and nearby Calton Hill adds to the scene. This view is unforgettable at any time of year, but especially on winter evenings when the sky takes on a deep blue and creates an extraordinary atmosphere. It's worth having a camera with you at this time, as night photos of the fountain come out truly spectacular. I have visited this spot many times at dusk and each time I left full of admiration.
West Princes Street Gardens – the perfect place for a walk
Ross Fountain is located in West Princes Street Gardens, which are one of the favourite leisure spots for residents and visitors in Edinburgh. The park runs along the prestigious Princes Street and offers beautiful views of the castle. Near the fountain you'll also find the famous Ross Bandstand – an outdoor stage where concerts are held – as well as traditional flower gardens. In summer the park is full of life – people lounge on the grass, children play by the fountain, and street musicians fill the air with music. In winter the gardens turn into a magical place – a traditional Christmas market appears here, with a carousel, an ice rink and stalls full of local delicacies.
How to get to Ross Fountain?
Ross Fountain is located in the very centre of Edinburgh, so getting there is very easy. The most convenient way is to walk from Princes Street – simply enter West Princes Street Gardens through one of the gates on Princes Street and walk a few dozen metres toward the castle. The fountain is visible from afar, especially in the evening when it shines brightly against the dark sky. There are several car parks and tram and bus stops nearby. If you're planning a visit to Edinburgh, Ross Fountain should be on your must-see list – whether you come by day or in the evening, the place always impresses and provides beautiful photo opportunities.
I encourage you to visit Ross Fountain at any time of day or night – it's one of those places in Edinburgh that never gets old and always offers something new.
