History of Dean Village
Dean Village, meaning "Mill Village", is an area situated on the banks of the Water of Leith that was once a bustling milling center. Water-powered mills operated here from the 12th century, and in the 17th century the village was known as one of the region's most important industrial centers. In the 19th century, after the mills closed, the area began to decline. However, thanks to the efforts of local communities and renovation investments, Dean Village regained its former splendor, becoming one of the most charming places in Edinburgh.
A Walk through Dean Village
When you cross Dean Bridge, you'll immediately notice a change in atmosphere. Narrow, cobbled lanes, stone houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, and abundant greenery make Dean Village feel removed from the city's hustle and bustle. While strolling through this charming district, be sure to look out for:
- Well Court - one of the most distinctive buildings in Dean Village. Built in the late 19th century, it originally housed mill workers. Now, after extensive renovation, it is one of the village's most photographed spots.
- Water of Leith Walkway - a picturesque walking route running along the Water of Leith, ideal for leisurely walks or bike rides. The trail passes through beautiful scenery and allows you to discover wildlife in the very heart of the city.
- Dean Cemetery - a mid-19th-century cemetery where many notable figures are buried, including distinguished artists, architects and engineers. The cemetery is not only a place for reflection, but also offers superb views of Dean Village and the surrounding area.
