Dunnet Head - the northernmost point on Great Britain's mainland

Dunnet Head is a peninsula in northern Scotland that is the northernmost point on the mainland of Great Britain. It is located on the northern coast of the Moray Firth.

The peninsula is a popular tourist destination, offering splendid views of the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding islands. There is also a lighthouse on the peninsula, which was built in 1831.

Our visit to Dunnet Head

During our trip around Scotland we also visited Dunnet Head. We drove onto the peninsula and parked in the car park near the lighthouse. We then walked to a viewpoint that offers a wonderful view of the ocean.

The view was truly amazing. We saw waves crashing against the rocks, and in the distance we could see the Orkney Islands. We were struck by how beautiful the place was.

Plans for the future

During our visit to Dunnet Head we did not go out to the more distant islands, but we plan to do so in the future. We hope we will be able to visit the Orkney Islands and see them up close.

Tips for visitors

If you plan to visit Dunnet Head, here are a few tips:

  • The best time to visit is spring or summer, when the weather is nicer.
  • Be prepared for wind and chill, even on warm days.
  • Bring comfortable shoes, because you'll have to walk on a rocky beach.
  • If you want to see the lighthouse, you have to pay an entrance fee.
