Scottish Castles - Redhouse Castle
Redhouse Castle (Redhouse Castle) is a ruined tower house and courtyard located near the village of Longniddry in East Lothian, about 20 kilometres east of Edinburgh. The tower house was built in the late 16th century, and a large additional tower was added to the north-west in the early 17th century.
The history of Redhouse Castle is rich and connected to many figures from Scottish history. The estate belonged to the Douglas family, and in 1607 it was bought by John Laing, Keeper of the Signet. It soon passed by marriage to the Hamiltons, who forfeited it after the Jacobite rising of 1745, and in 1755 it was bought by Lord Elibank.
Abandoned, the castle fell into ruin and is now part of the Gosford Estate of the Earls of Wemyss.
Today Redhouse Castle is a roofless ruin beside Redhouse Nurseries; it can be seen from the outside and admired for its picturesque setting. The castle is considered one of the most beautiful places in Scotland and is often used as a setting for films and photo shoots.
