The castle was the childhood home of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother,who spent much of her early life here and remained deeply attached to the estate throughout her lifetime.

Princess Margaret,the younger sister of Queen Elizabeth II,was born at Glamis Castle on 21 August 1930.

Queen Elizabeth II frequently visited the castle during her younger years and maintained close family connections with the Lyon family.

These royal associations have helped make Glamis one of Scotland’s most celebrated historic homes.

Janet Douglas and the Grey Lady

One of the most famous stories connected with Glamis Castle concerns Janet Douglas,Lady Glamis.

Janet was a member of the powerful Douglas family and became caught up in the political conflicts of the reign of King James V.She was accused of treason and involvement in a plot against the king.

After a controversial trial,she was executed at Edinburgh in 1537.Her death is widely regarded by historians as one of the most tragic miscarriages of justice in Scottish history.

According to local tradition,her spirit returned to Glamis Castle and became known as the Grey Lady or White Lady.One chair in the castle chapel is traditionally left empty for her ghost.

Whether fact or folklore,the story remains one of the castle’s most enduring legends.
