Wawel Dragon

The Wawel Dragon is one of the most famous figures in Polish mythology and history. Legend says that the dragon lived on Wawel Hill in Kraków and terrorized the local inhabitants, demanding sacrifices of cattle or people. It was so enormous that it could swallow an entire cow and several sheep at once.

According to the legend, the dragon was defeated by a young cobbler named Skuba, who came up with a clever plan. Skuba filled leather sacks with sulfur, then took one of the sheep and stuffed it with the sacks. The sheep was soon seized by the dragon, who after swallowing the sacks felt very thirsty. The cobbler offered the dragon another sheep, and after it swallowed that the dragon began to drink water from the Vistula. Because the sulfur filling its stomach began to react with the water, the dragon started to feel intense stomach pain and began to burst. Finally it exploded with a mighty bang, and Skuba became a hero.

The Wawel Dragon is considered a symbol of Kraków and Poland. It is worth noting that its story is not clear-cut and may have been inspired by various phenomena, such as volcanic eruptions or floods. Nevertheless, this legend has survived for centuries and is often used in popular culture.
