Nin has over 2,000 years of history. In Roman times the town, known as Aenona, was a regional administrative center with a forum, an amphitheater and the largest temple in Dalmatia. After being conquered by the Slavs and Croats it was destroyed and later rebuilt as a key administrative and religious center. In the Middle Ages Croatian rulers were crowned here, and the town became the seat of bishops, including the famous Gregory of Nin.
The old town of Nin is located on an island that is easy to explore. Two bridges lead to it: the Lower Bridge, intended for pedestrians, and the Upper Bridge. While wandering around, it's worth seeing the monumental remains of the Roman temple and the Church of the Holy Cross, which is considered one of the smallest cathedrals in the world. Another important monument is the parish Church of St. Anselm with the 15th-century Gospa od Zeceva chapel.
Nin is also famous for salt production, which dates back to ancient times. At the Salt Museum you can learn the history of this commodity and buy local salt products.
Nin also offers wonderful beaches. The most famous is the Queen's Beach, ideal for families with small children because of its shallow water. Other popular spots are the beaches Ninska Laguna, Zdrijac and Prodorica, which are a paradise for windsurfers and kitesurfers.
Those who enjoy active pursuits can go on bike trips along the local routes. It's also worth visiting the island of Pag, known for its beautiful beaches and amazing views, and Zadar, with its famous Sea Organ and spectacular sunsets.
Nin is an ideal place for a peaceful getaway, full of historic monuments and natural beauty. Whether you're interested in history or are looking for the perfect beach to relax, Nin has something to offer everyone. It's a place well worth visiting during a trip around Croatia.

Gregory of Nin – An Important Figure in the History of Croatia.
Gregory of Nin (Grgur Ninski) is one of the most important figures in the history of Croatia. He was the bishop of Nin in the 10th century and played a key role in the struggle for the Croatian Church's independence from the influence of the Roman papacy. Gregory of Nin was an advocate for using the Croatian language in the liturgy, which was an important step in preserving culture and national identity.
Gregory of Nin, as a bishop, opposed the decision of the Lateran Council (925), which ordered that Masses be celebrated exclusively in Latin. Thanks to his efforts, the Croatian Church was able to continue the tradition of using Glagolitic, the oldest Slavic script, in the liturgy. His fight to preserve the native language in the church had enormous significance for the national identity of the Croats.
The monument to Gregory of Nin, by the famous Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović, stands in the center of Nin. The monument is a symbol of the struggle for national identity and is often visited by tourists who believe that touching the statue's big toe brings good luck.
Gregory of Nin remains an important figure in Croatian history, serving as a reminder of the importance of language and culture in building national identity.
