Loch Shiel is about 28 kilometres long and is one of the main lochs in the Lochaber region. The loch contains many small islands and peninsulas, as well as ruins of castles and fortifications that recall Scotland's rich history.
Loch Shiel has also become famous for being used as a setting in many films and television series, including:
- "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" - in this film Loch Shiel appears as the backdrop for scenes from the Triwizard Tournament.
- "Highlander" - the loch was used as one of the locations in the 1986 film.
- "Braveheart" - Loch Shiel was one of the filming locations used in this Oscar-nominated 1995 production.
- "Rob Roy" - the 1995 film telling the story of the Scottish national hero also made use of the beauty around Loch Shiel.
- "Outlander" - this series, based on the bestselling novels by Diana Gabaldon, features many shots of Scotland's beautiful landscapes, including Loch Shiel.
Films and television series not only showcase Loch Shiel's charms, but also highlight its beauty and majesty. Because of this, Loch Shiel is one of the most beautiful places in Scotland to visit.
