It is hard to believe that so much time has passed since our last visit.We have always had good memories of Gdańsk,but this time we were especially curious to see how much the city had changed over all those years. We started,of course,with a walk through the Old Town.It is probably the best way to rediscover the atmosphere of Gdańsk.A slow walk among the historic townhouses,narrow streets and the city’s most recognisable landmarks quickly reminded us why Gdańsk leaves such a strong impression. The biggest surprise,however,was just how much the city had grown and developed.We had not been here for 14 years,and the difference was easy to see.Everywhere we looked there were places we did not remember,new buildings,renewed public spaces and entire parts of the city that looked completely different from our previous visit. It was especially interesting to see how the newer developments blend with the historic parts of the city.Gdańsk has managed to keep its character,but at the same time it is clear how much it has developed over the past several years.In many places,it felt almost as if we were discovering the city again for the first time. We also could not miss the chance to take a walk at night.The Old Town looks completely different after dark.The illuminated townhouses,streets and reflections of the lights create a fantastic atmosphere,and the evening is probably one of the best times to simply slow down and enjoy the architecture without rushing. Just as importantly,we felt safe during our evening walk.I only hope it stays that way,because these days there are always people whose behaviour can spoil the atmosphere even in the most beautiful places. The walk through the city centre itself was very enjoyable.We did not try to see everything at once.Instead,we wanted to take our time,look at the architecture and compare today’s Gdańsk with the city we remembered from 14 years ago. And perhaps that is what makes returning to a place after so many years so interesting.You remember it in a certain way,but when you finally come back,some things still feel familiar while others have changed almost completely. Gdańsk made a very good impression on us.The city has clearly grown,changed and modernised,but at the same time it has kept the distinctive atmosphere that makes it worth visiting.
